Much more evident in the Japanese novels and films: Sadako's influence was limited to the immediate area surrounding the well, and even then, only to material that she could affect with her. He also blinded himself so Samara couldn't kill him. Mai becomes this for Yoichi after Reiko dies.
While uniformly thriller, the novels have a more science fiction slant, whereas the adaptations tend to lean more on the Horror part. Unlike Sadako, Samara psychically disfigures her victims' faces before they finally die of a heart attack. This may be an indication of her inability to reproduce in the novels due to Testicular Feminization Syndrome and her obsession with procreating in the later novels.
A set of calamitous circumstances result in Sadako being beaten to death by the acting troupe and taken to Dr. Ikuma's home, where they intend to finish off the evil Sadako. Unknown to Sadako, her twin is the actual culprit, using her twin as a conduit.

The movie implies that sometime in her early youth Sadako split into two identical girls. In one scene in Ring, Ryuji and Reiko Asakawa interrogate Sadako's uncle, Takashi Yamamura, and share a vision of her mother's disastrous public demonstration of her psychic powers, in which a young Sadako approaches Reiko in the vision and leaves a burn mark on her arm. When someone watches the cursed tape (or something else carrying the curse) some of their DNA is changed to become that of the Ring Virus (i.e. Rachel, her ex-boyfriend Noah Clay (Martin Henderson) and their son Aidan (David Dorfman) all watch the video. Rachel climbs out of the well with Samara pursuing her, but Rachel covers the seal on the well just in time. Anna then commits suicide by jumping off a cliff. Sadako survives in spite of her wounds for thirty years, kept alive by pure malice.
